Mike O'Donnell (Zac Efron), 17 ans étudiant, a apparement tout ce qu'il désire. Sportif de haut niveau, il semble promis à un bel avenir. Mais, il décide de tout plaquer pour pouvoir aller vivre avec sa petite amie. 25 ans plus tard, Mike (Matthew Perry) devenu adulte, trouve que sa vie n'est pas du tout celle qu'il avait espéré. Séparé de sa femme Scarlett (Leslie Mann), il habite avec son meilleur ami. Sa carrière dans une entreprise pharmaceutique est dans une impasse et il a peu de contacts avec ses enfants. Mais, soudain, suite à des circonstances extraordinaires, il se retrouve à l'âge de 17 ans avec la possibilité de recommencer sa vie.


