L'acteur sans succès Jean Campagnol, alias Johnny Star pour la caméra, se trouve une fois de plus dans une situation embarrassante. Sans travail, sans argent, il doit reprendre la route et, quitte à cacher sa misère, traverser le monde. Sur son chemin, il trouve un joli village, caché entre écurie et tas de fumier, le lieu idéal pour se faire oublier. Johnny Star va faire la connaissance de deux compagnons, François Lecoq et Gros William, ainsi que de tous les animaux de la ferme. Et malgré leurs différences, ils devront unir leurs forces afin de secourir Douce, menu du repas de Maître Loup...


