Harold, un cadre moyen travailleur mais sous-évalué (David Oyelowo), apprend qu'il va être licencié. Pendant un voyage d'affaires au Mexique, il décide de mettre en scène son propre kidnapping afin d'obtenir une rançon de son entreprise. Lorsque les patrons cupides et sans coeur de Harold (Charlize Theron et Joel Edgerton) découvrent que l'assurance de l'entreprise leur rapporte plus d'argent si Harold est mort, les rôles s'inversent et Harold, désemparé, se retrouve traqué par des tueurs à gage et des barons de la drogue
