Byron Tiller décide un jour d'abandonner son emploi dans la publicité pour se consacrer à l'écriture de romans. Son premier livre ne s'est pas vendu, mais son épouse Dena croit en son talent et son jeune fils l'adore. Ce romancier sans le sou se trouve bientôt dans l'impossibilité de payer ses factures et de faire face à ses créanciers. Quand son dernier manuscrit est rejeté par les éditeurs, Byron tente en vain de retrouver son ancien travail et se voit refuser toute aide financière de la part de son beau-père. Il est alors dans l'obligation de travailler dans une agence d'escorte dirigée par l'élégant et entreprenant Luther Fox, The Elysian Fields, pour pouvoir gagner un peu d'argent. Ce job va lui permettre de se rapprocher d'Andrea Allcott, une femme fortunée dont le mari Tobias n'est autre qu'un célèbre romancier, vieux et malade. Commence alors pour Byron une double vie…
