Après avoir perdu ses parents tués dans un accident de voiture, le jeune Peter, alors âgé de 4 ans, s'enfuit dans la forêt, où il découvre un Dragon qui devient son seul et unique compagnon. Quatre ans plus tard, lorsqu'une usine voisine menace de détruire la forêt, Peter rencontre ses premiers humains depuis la mort de ses parents et se retrouve confronté à un terrible choix : rester avec son ami dragon ou partir vers la ville et la perspective d'une enfance normale.
