Dans les dernières années de l’époque victorienne, la ville de Londres est assaillie par les "Touchées" : des personnes (principalement des femmes) qui se retrouvent soudainement dotées d’aptitudes extraordinaires. Certaines sont charmantes, d’autres très dérangeantes... Amalia True, une mystérieuse veuve au coup de poing un peu trop facile, et Penance Adair, une jeune et brillante inventrice, sont toutes deux à la tête de cette élite. Elles créent alors un foyer pour les "Touchées", tout en combattant les forces de Mal, pour faire de la place à celles et ceux que l'Histoire, telle que nous la connaissons, aimerait oublier…
