Wanneer de druïde Panoramix ten val komt tijdens het plukken van maretakken besluit hij om de toekomst van hun dorp veilig te stellen. Samen met Asterix, Obelix en de trouwe Idefix, reist hij het Gallische rijk rond, op zoek naar een getalenteerde en betrouwbare Galliër aan wie hij "het geheim van de toverdrank" kan toevertrouwen.
