Vlak voor zijn tweede jaar op de Zweinsteins Hogeschool voor Hekserij en Hocus-Pocus wordt tovenaarsleerling Harry Potter door de elf Dobby gewaarschuwd dat zijn terugkeer op de school tot een ramp zal leiden. Harry gaat toch, en komt er achter dat hij nog steeds gehaat wordt door Professor Sneep en zijn klasgenoot Draco Malfidus. Er is echter ook goed nieuws: de beroemde schrijver Gladianus Smalhart is de nieuwe Duistere Krachten-leraar. Na een tijdje worden enkele Zweinstein-studenten versteend aangetroffen... maar wie of wat is de oorzaak hiervan? Zelfs Harry staat niet boven verdenking.


