Wanneer Chris (Ryan Reynolds) op een avond zijn liefde eindelijk toont voor een schoolvriendin (Amy Smart) maar de liefde helaas onbeantwoord blijft, stort de wereld van Chris in. Tot overmaat van ramp wordt hij door zijn volumineuze omvang bespot door zijn medeleerlingen.
Jaren later is Chris een succesvolle platen producent en het fysieke tegenbeeld van zijn "high school –jaren". Wanneer hij terugkeert van een zakentrip, maakt het vliegtuig een tussenlanding in New Jersey, precies het plaatsje waar zijn jeugdvriendin nog steeds woont. Hij besluit haar na al die jaren een bezoekje te brengen...
