De Oostenrijkse prinses Marie-Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) trouwt in 1770 op jonge leeftijd met Lodewijk XVI (Jason Schwartzman) en belandt zo op het hof van Versailles. Wanneer haar onverschillige echtgenoot een paar jaar later de troon van zijn vader (Rip Torn) bestijgt, wordt Marie-Antoinette koningin van Frankrijk. Vanwege haar IOostenrijkse afkomst is ze echter niet populair onder de bevolking. Zo zou ze een slechte invloed hebben op de leden van het Franse hof en vele schandalen op haar naam hebben staan.
