Shrek en Fiona moeten binnenkort hun rol als koning en koningin van Far Far Away opnemen, maar ze willen liever terug naar hun moeras. Dus stelt de koning hen voor de keuze: ze hoeven het land niet te besturen als ze de rechtmatige troonopvolger kunnen vinden. Shrek, Donkey en Puss in Boots doorkruisen het rijk op zoek naar Artie, die niemand minder dan de jonge, rebelse koning Arthur blijkt te zijn, de neef van koningin Lilian, die binnenkort zijn diploma behaalt. Op de terugweg verzint Shrek het verhaal van de ridders van de ronde tafel en Donkey wordt de Vrouwe van het Meer die het zwaard Excalibur aan de jonge koning geeft. Intussen besluit Prince Charming op het kasteel dat het tijd is om een staatsgreep te plegen. Fiona organiseert het verzet in afwachting van de terugkomst van Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots en de jonge koning Arthur.
