James Sterwart kreeg zijn enige Oscar voor zijn vertolking van Macauley Connor in The Philadelphia Story, een reporter die naar een op trouwen staande rijkeluisdochter (Katharine Hepburn) gestuurd wordt. De man achter het gekonkelfoes is haar ex (Cary Grant), die nog altijd een boontje voor haar heeft. Maar ook de reporter blijft niet onverschillig voor haar charmes. Het resultaat is een spetterende komedie waar de rake oneliners van links naar rechts vliegen (en terug), met drie van Hollywoods allerbeste acteurs en actrices in de hoofdrol.
