Wahlberg speelt Billy Taggart, een voormalig agent die nu zijn centen bij elkaar sprokkelt als onderbetaalde privé-detective. De machtige - en machtig corrupte - burgemeester (Crowe) vraagt hem te onderzoeken met wie zijn lieftallige vrouw (Zeta-Jones) vreemdgaat. Wanneer Taggart achter de informatie komt en deze overhandigt aan de hoogwaardigheidsbekleder, blijkt dat deze niet alleen bewijs zocht voor een scheiding. Al snel is de ex-agent verwikkeld in een web van chantage. De burgemeester heeft Taggart echter enigszins onderschat.


