The Rover speelt zich af in de Australische woestijn in een gevaarlijke nabije toekomst. Eric heeft alles en iedereen achtergelaten. Wanneer zijn auto, zijn laatste bezit, gestolen wordt door een bende gevaarlijke criminelen, gaat Eric in de achtervolging. Daarbij krijgt hij hulp van Reynolds, het naïeve bendelid dat achtergelaten werd in de bloederige chaos van hun laatste ontsnapping.
