Frankrijk, eind 19e eeuw. Wanneer Marie door haar ouders bij het Larnay Instituut wordt ondergebracht, weten de zusters geen raad met haar. Marie is namelijk zowel doof als blind. Zuster Marguerite is echter vastbesloten om de onaangepaste Marie te leren communiceren. Terwijl Marie's belevingswereld langzaamaan groter wordt, gevuld met menselijk contact, vreugde en taal, ontstaat er een tedere band tussen haar en de jonge zuster.


