Terwijl de Tweede Wereldoorlog in volle gang is, wordt een joods gezin naar Auschwitz gedeporteerd. Onderweg weet de vader een van zijn pasgeboren baby's te redden door hem uit de trein te gooien. Daar in de sneeuw wordt hij gevonden en opgevangen door een Pools stel. Zij zijn houthakkers die tot dan toe kinderloos waren gebleven.


