Zarafa draait om een wijfjesgiraf en haar onafscheidelijke vriend Maki, een tienjarig, Afrikaans jongetje. Wanneer de Egyptische pasja de giraf als een geschenk geeft aan de Franse koning, begint een avontuurlijke reis. Woestijnbewoner Hassan moet het dier naar Europa brengen, maar Maki wil geen afscheid nemen van de giraf. Hij doet er alles aan om Zarafa in haar geboorteland te houden..
