Fabrizio est acousticien, Alex dirige le service marketing d'une grande marque de sous-vêtements. La quarantaine, ils forment un couple heureux, sans enfant, avec leur vieille chienne Esperanza. Poursuivant sa carrière tambour battant, Alex se voit proposer un poste à New York, pour reprendre, à son retour, la présidence de la filiale française. Sentant poindre en elle un désir d'enfant, elle se trouve face à un dilemme : la maternité lui semble incompatible avec l'avenir brillant qu'on lui prédit. Si elle accepte cette promotion, elle peut faire une croix sur son désir d'enfant. Elle tente de s'en ouvrir à Fabrizio qui fait la sourde oreille. Mais déstabilisé par les changements d'attitude d'Alex, Fabrizio lui cache toutes sortes de douleurs d'origines psychosomatiques qu'il commence à ressentir chaque fois qu'elle évoque le sujet.


