Deze remake van Hawks beroemde film noir verplaatst de actie van Chicago 1930 naar het milieu van de Cubaanse ballingen 1980. Drank wordt cocaïne en Paul Muni wordt Al Pacino. Maar er is meer: opklimmende gangster Tony Montana ontdekt geleidelijk dat de kapitalistische maatschappij geen haar beter is dan de communistische die hij ontvlucht was. Een film waarin alles buitensporig is, maar wie had van De Palma intimisme verwacht?
