Alma est scientifique au célèbre musée de Pergame à Berlin. Afin d'obtenir des fonds de recherche pour son travail, elle est persuadée de participer à une étude extraordinaire. Pendant trois semaines, elle doit vivre avec un robot humanoïde adapté à son caractère et à ses besoins, dont l'intelligence artificielle est conçue pour être le partenaire de vie idéal pour elle. Alma rencontre Tom, une machine à forme humaine dans une classe à part, créée uniquement pour la rendre heureuse. Un conte comique-tragique sur les questions de l'amour, du désir et de ce qui fait de l'être humain un être humain.
