Pendant l'été 1936, deux militaires bavarois se lancent à l'assaut de la face Nord("Nordwand ") de l'Eiger, réputée l'une des plus inaccessibles du massif des Alpes bernoises. Une équipe autrichienne, constituée de membres du parti nazi allemand, les talonne afin d'être la première au sommet, jusque-là inviolé. L'évènement est couvert par les journalistes, mais les conditions météorologiques vont se dégrader. Le péril grandit, la montagne réclame ses corps...


