Comment vivre sa vie lorsqu'on sait qu'elle n'aura pas de fin ? C'est la situation dans laquelle se retrouve Adaline (Blake Lively) après un accident qui lui dû être fatal dans les années '30. Alors qu'elle restera figée au même âge toute sa vie, elle va voir son mari, ses enfants vieillir et mourir. Peu à peu, Adaline va se forcer à ne plus aimer et à vivre sa vie sans aucune attache. Seulement voilà, vivre l'éternité toute seule est très difficile et la vie d'Adaline va de nouveau changer lorsqu'elle va rencontrer un homme qui va réussir à percer sa carapace.De nouveau, la jeune femme va s'autoriser à aimer et va craindre, plus que tout, d'avoir le coeur brisé par un homme qui, lui, reste la victime du temps.
