Le film raconte la véritable histoire de comment l'écrivain J.M. Barrie (Johnny Depp) trouva l'inspiration pour l'élaboration du conte de Peter Pan. Il rencontra une famille composée de quatre enfants sans père dont la mère (Kate Winslet) était à l'agonie. Suite à cette rencontre émouvante, il eut l'idée d'écrire un livre sur les enfants qui ne veulent pas quitter le monde de l'enfance.


