Na de overwinning op Leonidas' 300, trekt het Perzische leger onder leiding van Xerxes verder in zuidelijke richting naar de grote Griekse steden. Het democratische Athene is de eerste stad die ze tegenkomen op hun pad. De stad heeft een sterke vloot en staat onder leiding van admiraal Themistocles. Themistocles is gedwongen een alliantie aan te gaan met de aartsrivaal van Athene, het oligarchische Sparta, wiens macht ligt bij zijn superieure infanterie. Xerxes heerst echter nog steeds oppermachtig in aantallen, zowel op zee als op land.


