De in Londen woonachtige belegger en 'hotshot' Max Skinner (Crowe) verhuist naar de Provence om een kleine wijngaard, die hij onlangs van zijn overleden oom heeft geërfd, te verkopen. Het is zijn bedoeling het erfgoed zo snel mogelijk van de hand te doen om zo ook zijn verleden voorgoed achter zich te laten. De realiteit blijkt echter anders uit te pakken dan hij zich dat had voorgesteld. Hij wordt langzaam maar zeker verliefd op het land en op een mooie dame.
