Het leven van de joodse professor Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) valt in 1967 uit elkaar, omdat z'n vrouw van hem wil scheiden. Bovendien zit hij ook opgescheept met zijn sociaal gehandicapte broer, die weigert om het huis te verlaten. En als dat nog niet genoeg is, is hij het beu dat z'n kinderen zoveel geld uitgeven en zijn beeldschone buurvrouw steeds naakt ligt te zonnebaden.
