Najaar 1975: Kapuscinski komt aan in Angola als oorlogscorrespondent van het Poolse persagentschap PAP. Het land staat in vuur en vlam. Twee Angolese legers - dat van de (socialistische) MPLA (gesteund door Cuba en de Sovjet Unie) en dat van de FNLA-UNITA (gesteund door de VS, de CIA en Zuid-Afrika) - vechten een bloedige burgeroorlog uit. Het lot van Angola zal worden bepaald door het leger dat vóór de Onafhankelijkheidsdag de overwinning weet te behalen. De datum staat al vast: 11 november 1975. De aftelling is begonnen.


