Nieuw-Zeeland, jaren '60... In een uithoek van de wereld wil Burt Munro zijn droom verwezenlijken : deelnemen aan de snelheidsrace in Salt Lake in Utah, USA.
Met niets meer dan zijn Kiwi-karakter en zijn obsessie, besluit hij zijn motorfiets, een "Indian" uit 1920, om te bouwen. Zonder budget, zonder steun van een team en tegen alle verwachtingen in, geraakt niet enkel in Bonneville... hij schrijft ook wereldgeschiedenis door niet één keer, maar keer op keer een nieuw wereldrecord neer te zetten.
