BY THE SEA volgt Roland (Pitt) en Vanessa (Jolie Pitt), een Amerikaanse schrijver en zijn vrouw naar het Frankrijk van de jaren '70. Wanneer zij aankomen in een rustig en pittoreske kustoord is hun huwelijk in een nakende crisis. Door hun tijd door te brengen met andere reizigers, onder wie de jonge Lea (Laurent) en François (Poupaud), en dorpsbewoners Michel (Arestrup) en Patrice (Bohringer), heeft het koppel door dat ze voor de uitdaging staan van al de onopgeloste moeilijkheden uit hun eigen levens.
