Kate is een getalenteerde maar over het paard getilde kunstschaatster. Haar schaatspartners zijn een voor een niet goed genoeg voor haar, maar ze moet en zal meedoen aan de Olympische spelen. Doug is een stoere jongen die lid is van het Amerikaanse ijshockeyteam tijdens de spelen in 1988 in Calgary. In de wedstrijd tegen West-Duitsland raakt hij zodanig geblesseerd, dat hij nooit meer in de nationale selectie kan spelen. Dan komt er iemand op het idee om van Kate en Doug een kunstschaatskoppel te maken...


