Frankrijk 1788. De verveelde markiezin De Merteuil vraagt haar ex-geliefde Vicomte de Valmont om een gunst. Haar ex-echtgenoot gaat trouwen met de jonge aantrekkelijke Cecile de Volanges. De markiezin wil graag dat Valmont Cecile verleidt vlak voor haar trouwdag. Maar Valmont heeft een andere uitdaging in gedachte, namelijk Madame de Tourvel, een mooie, maar getrouwde vrouw. De markiezin daagt Valmont uit, ze gelooft niet dat hij in staat is haar te verleiden. Lukt het wel, dan is de beloning een laatste nacht met haar.


