Batou is een levende cyborg wiens lichaam volledig door mensen werd gemaakt. Het enige 'menselijke' aan hem is zijn brein, waarin de herinneringen sluimeren van een vorig leven. De wereld van Batou lijkt echter niet in het geringst op zijn droom: de grens tussen mens en machine is namelijk volledig vervaagd, en de mensen zijn vergeten hoe ze 'menselijk' moeten zijn. Ironisch genoeg is het de cyborg die dit maar al te goed beseft, en hij probeert iets van de menselijke essentie terug te winnen: de onschuld.
