Goodbye Bafana vertelt het verhaal van James Gregory, een gevangenisbewaker, die de opdracht krijgt Nelson Mandela persoonlijk te bewaken. 25 jaar lang was Gregory de bewaker van Mandela. Van bij zijn opsluiting in de jaren '60 op Robben Island tot bij zijn vrijlating in 1990. Gregory was doorheen de jaren Mandela's cipier, zijn censor, maar ook zijn vertrouwenspersoon.


