De moslima Hala (Geraldine Viswanathan) is een talentvol schrijfster, die van skateboarden houdt. Ze probeert ook netjes de normen en waarden van de moslimcultuur na te leven. Als ze valt voor haar klasgenoot Jesse (Jack Kilmer), waarmee ze haar passies schrijven en skaten deelt, beginnen haar plannen voor de toekomst en de verwachtingen van haar ouders met elkaar te botsen.
