De film gaat over legende Nelson Mandela die voor en na de officiële val van de apartheid in 1990, het jaar dat Mandela vrijkwam, streed tegen deze rassenscheiding die plaatsvond in Zuid-Afrika. Mandela werd in 1994 president van Zuid-Afrika en was in 1995 het publieke gezicht van de Rugby World Cup. Hij greep dit toernooi aan om het verdeelde land te verenigen.
