Niemand gelooft dat professor Trevor Anderson een fantastische ontdekking zal doen. Zijn onconventionele hypotheses krijgen weinig steun van de wetenschappelijke gemeenschap.
Maar tijdens een expeditie in Ijsland, komen Trevor en zijn tienerneef Sean, samen met hun gids, de mooie Hannah, vast te zitten in een grot. Hun enige hoop om eruit te geraken, is dieper in de Aarde te graven, hopend een andere uitgang te vinden. Tijdens dit spannend avontuur zien ze onbekende werelden, prachtige creaties, dodelijke gevaren en soms ook herrezen wezens uit het verleden... Een ding is zeker: alles kan gebeuren tientallen kilometers onder de oppervlakte van de Aarde. Als ze het daglicht opnieuw willen zien, dan moeten Trevor en zijn vrienden zich haasten, want een vulkaanuitbarsting dreigt roet in het eten te gooien.
