Moskou, jaren '80. De Koude Oorlog is volop aan de gang. Mitterand krijgt geruchten te horen over een gigantische spionage-operatie vanuit Rusland. Hij beslist om president Reagan in te lichten. Volgens een geheime bron uit Moskou, die "Farewell" wordt genoemd, zouden de Russen op de hoogte zijn van allerlei Westerse onderzoeken. De bron zelf blijkt een jonge, franse ingenieur te zijn die benaderd is door de Moskovitische regering. Al gauw is niet alleen zijn eigen leven maar ook dat van zijn familie in gevaar...


