Mireille houdt van schilderkunst en poëzie. Ze werkt als serveerster in de cafetaria van de Beaux-Arts in Charleville en leeft van kruimeldiefstallen en sigarettendozen. Omdat ze niet in staat is het grote familiehuis dat ze erft aan de oevers van de Maas te onderhouden, besluit Mireille om drie huurders in huis te nemen. Drie mannen die haar routine zullen verstoren en haar onbewust voorbereiden op de terugkeer van de vierde: haar grote jeugdliefde, de dichter.
