Het platteland, begin 20ste eeuw. Célestine, geroemd voor haar schoonheid, is een jong kamermeisje uit Parijs die net in dienst getreden is bij de familie Lanlaire. Célestine moet niet alleen de avances van Meneer ontwijken. Ze wordt ook geconfronteerd met de zeer strenge Mevrouw Lanlaire die het huishouden met ijzeren hand regeert. Célestine ontmoet Joseph, de mysterieuze tuinman van het domein, voor wie ze een absolute fascinatie ontwikkelt.


