Met de regelmaat van een klok verrast de franse film ons met een zogenaamde "kleine" film. Een film die geen grote potten breekt maar intelligent en boeiend overkomt. Eén die naar meer smaakt. Xavier Beauvois' vierde film is er zo één. Hij laat ons kennismaken met een pas afgestudeerde politieoffcier Antoine. De petit lieutenant uit de titel. Hij wordt in Parijs geposteerd en komt er in de ploeg terecht van kapitein Vaudieu. Zij heeft net een gevecht tegen de alcohol achter de rug en probeert opnieuw greep te krijgen op een keihard professioneel leven.
