In deze film met western-allures, begeleidt de teruggetrokken maar plichtbewuste dorpsonderwijzer Daru (Viggo Mortensen) zijn van moord beschuldigde dorpsgenoot Mohamed (Reda Kateb) naar de dichtstbijzijnde rechtbank. Vanuit allerlei hoeken belaagd door wraakzuchtige bendes, groeit onderweg het wederzijdse begrip tussen de twee. Samen binden ze de strijd aan om hun vrijheid terug te winnen.
