Begin jaren '60 leven beste vriendinnen en buren Alice (Jessica Chastain) en Celine (Anne Hathaway) een idyllische levensstijl met verzorgde gazons, succesvolle echtgenoten en kinderen van dezelfde leeftijd. Na een tragisch ongeluk wordt hun perfecte leven abrupt verstoord.
