"Mufasa: The Lion King" laat Rafiki de legende van Mufasa vertellen aan de jonge leeuwenwelp Kiara, dochter van Simba en Nala. Timon en Pumbaa zijn er weer bij met hun kenmerkende dynamiek. Het verhaal wordt verteld in flashbacks en toont Mufasa als een verweesd welpje, verloren en alleen tot hij een sympathieke leeuw genaamd Taka ontmoet - de erfgenaam van een koninklijke bloedlijn. De toevallige ontmoeting is het begin van een grootse reis van een buitengewone groep buitenbeentjes op zoek naar hun bestemming - hun relaties zullen op de proef worden gesteld wanneer ze samenwerken om een dreigende en dodelijke vijand te ontwijken.
