De bekwame dokter Alexandra (Özlem Saglanmak, bekend van Borgen) moet door personeelsgebrek twee shifts tegelijkertijd draaien op de spoedafdeling. Wanneer ze door tijdgebrek de achttienjarige patiënt Oliver en zijn moeder (Trine Dyrholm) naar huis stuurt en Oliver enkele minuten later een levensbedreigende beroerte krijgt, begint Alexandra aan zichzelf te twijfelen. Schuldgevoelens en verwijten zinderen door de ziekenhuisgangen en Alexandra wordt geconfronteerd met de emotionele gevolgen van een medische fout. Second Victims laat zien dat dokters even goed slachtoffer zijn van het falende zorgsysteem.
De film is een enorm succes in Denemarken en wordt er de beste film van het jaar genoemd.
