Finney Shaw, een verlegen maar slimme 13-jarige jongen, wordt ontvoerd door een sadistische moordenaar en opgesloten in een geluidsdichte kelder waar schreeuwen weinig zin heeft. Wanneer een losgekoppelde telefoon aan de muur begint te rinkelen, ontdekt Finney dat hij de stemmen kan horen van de vorige slachtoffers van de moordenaar. En zij zijn vastbesloten om ervoor te zorgen dat Finney niet hetzelfde overkomt als wat hen is aangedaan.
