Maryam is arts in een ziekenhuis in een klein stadje in Saoedi-Arabië. Als ze naar Riyadh wil reizen om te solliciteren voor een functie als chirurg in een groot hospitaal, wordt haar het recht ontzegd om te vliegen. Als alleenstaande vrouw heeft ze namelijk een toestemming nodig die is ondertekend door haar vader, die helaas afwezig is. Het wordt het begin van haar verzet. Ze komtin opstand tegen dit reisverbod en besluit zich kandidaat te stellen voor gemeenteraadsverkiezingen in haar stad, maar hoe kan een vrouw campagne voeren in dit land?
