In het waargebeurde The Railway Man speelt Oscarwinnaar Colin Firth de rol van Eric Lomax, een Britse legerofficier die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog als Japanse krijgsgevangene moest werken aan de Birma-spoorlijn. Decennia later besluit Lomax, inmiddels getrouwd met Patti (Oscarwinnares Nicole Kidman), op zoek te gaan naar zijn martelaars om bevrijd te worden van zijn oorlogsverleden. De film is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek over Lomax's ervaringen van voor, tijdens en na de oorlog. Eric Lomax overleed in oktober 2012.
