Mauro wordt in 1970 door zijn vader en moeder afgezet bij zijn opa in een Joodse buurt van Sao Paolo. Terwijl zijn ouders hals over kop vertrekken, komt Mauro erachter dat zijn opa net die dag is overleden. Terwijl heel het land in de ban is van het WK voetbal, moet Mauro alleen zien te overleven. Waar zijn ouders naar toe zijn en wanneer ze terug komen, weet hij niet. De oude Shlomo schiet hem tegen wil en dank te hulp.


