In 1962 was Roald Dahl (Hugh Bonneville) een opkomend kinderboekenschrijver en zijn vrouw, Patricia Neal (Keeley Hawes), een filmster uit Hollywood. Dit onwaarschijnlijke koppel trok zich terug op het Engelse platteland om hun groeiende jonge gezin groot te brengen, alleen werd hun leven op zijn kop gezet toen hun dochter Olivia het mazelenvirus opliep en overleed. Haar dood verwoestte het koppel, maar hun gedeelde verdriet werd een bron van verlossing en kracht, Neal zou een Oscar winnen en Dahl schreef zijn kaskraker.
