Een soort Mad Max gaat uit vissen in deze film waar helemaal niets van klopt. Het verhaal speelt zich af in de toekomst wanneer door het smelten van de poolkappen de aarde met water bedekt is. Costner speelt 'The Mariner', een in eerste instantie ruwe bolster, ruwe pit type, maar wanneer hij twee vrouwen aan boord neemt om op zoek te gaan naar land, smelt ook hij.
